I was fortunate to collaborate with the lovely Debbie Carlos on a frame project for her poster shop. We wanted to design a simple frame that would be affordable, easy to use, and could ship in a poster tube! It was important that it didn’t damage the artwork so that the poster could be changed out easily.
I went through several phases of the design process and finally came up with a design that used embedded earth magnets. This was my first time producing multiples instead of one-off projects for friends or family, and it was intense. But really fun. In the first round, I build over 50 frames!
Here’s the write-up from the website:
We have collaborated with local artist and woodworker Nicole Stevens Edge to come up with beautifully handmade limited edition poster rail system. It is a simple, fast and easy way of hanging your posters, giving them a more finished and modern look.
Our system attaches onto the poster using powerful magnets and can be hung either by hooking the frame onto nails or screws using specially cut keyhole slots in the back or by simply hanging it from a leather strap.
Rails measure 1” in height, are made from pale domestic poplar hand selected from a local (family-owned/independent) lumber yard, crafted in small batches, hand sanded and finished with Danish oil. Available in three widths: 24″, 36″ and 48″, and come in two styles: with or without full grain latigo leather strap. Leather strap will add 6″ to the overall height. Each set is subtly stamped on the back with Edge’s logo.
Each set comes with two rails. One to attach to the top and another to attach to the bottom of the poster.
Every set comes with magnets and installation instructions. Please note that due to the organic nature of the rails, there may be some variation in grain from set to set. Each piece in the set is carefully selected to match with each other.
